The Global Travel Mentality
Global travel is an endlessly fascinating adventure. Of course global travel is not for everyone. It usually requires, a vagabond state of mind to a degree. When you seriously travel, you see and even meet all kinds of travelers. And of course, you re-learn many of the things you were taught in your education.
All in all when you keep your eyes open, global travel can make you wiser and definitely more educated than you would be if you had stayed put in one place all your life.
When it comes to travel, ‘different strokes for different folks’. I recall once when traveling through North Dakota, USA, of all places, meeting twin brothers in a very out of the way place called Four Corners Bar and Restaurant. I joined them in conversation and in no time they confessed to being in their 80s, and living and farming in their little county their entire life. They never went any where, ever. They sold their land for two or three million, and just stayed there living out the rest of their lives right there! Clearly not global travelers!
There are also older travelers who are retired, and, while they usually put up a strong appearance, these older or retired travelers often have quite a number of physical and security challenges they must cope with behind the scenes , so to speak. But they endure determined to live life to the fullest.
Perhaps the most light hearted travelers are the young, often students. They travel light, and keep their expenses to a minimum. Indeed they often work as they travel. Youth hostels vary widely in the accommodations they offer but can offer pleasant travel experiences – much can be learned from fellow globe trotters there.
They serve as English teachers where ever they go. They perform music or comedy in night clubs along the way. They make and sell jewelry as to other tourists as they travel. Some work online on a project by project basis when ever they need more money. And of course, there are always some who just call home for more money!
Getting around wherever you travel is not usually much of a problem. Buses, taxis, and car rental are just a couple of options.
When considering mode of travel a car rental clearly allows for the most flexibility in ones schedule, but does remove you to the ‘tourist’ category and you will tend to experience less of the true local culture than you would traveling by bus or taxi.
